Monthly Goals
Two of my personal requirements this year are completed on a month to month basis and I want to detail my progress but it's ending up as a separate blog because my numbers update turned out to be quite a bit longer than I intended.
1) focusing on different non-I Ho Chuan forms per month
For this month I was working on Stick I. It was really nice to force myself to carve out time to work on a form besides my hand and weapon for this year and I am really liking having this as one of my requirements. We always tell ourselves "ok now take this lesson and apply it to everything else you know" but sometimes it's hard to evenly apply those lessons across the board, inevitably something is going to get left behind so I want to use this requirement to try to at least cover my bases with my forms. I have been trying to integrate the specifics of what we've been taught and practice them while I'm doing Stick. I have come up with some questions I would have never thought about if I hadn't been doing this form in this way, and I think I have made some improvements to how I am doing this form (I say "some" because at the scale I'm doing this it is nowhere near the number needed for mastery so the progress is going to be slower)
2) completing 12 goals through the year
Many of my monthly goals revolve around learning or doing large task that have always somehow slipped of my to-do list, the problem with this is I found it very challenging to define the success of each goal since many don't have a definite "end". I want to track the hours spent and correlate that to a feeling of "did I feel like I accomplished this goal?"/" Do I feel like I gave this my all or am I allowing wiggle room for mediocrity in my life?" I roughly had the goal of putting in one hour a day and this month and I did 37.5 hours out of the goal of 28 hours. I definitely feel like I put in a solid active effort to achieve this goal, but I also think given the circumstances of this month I could have done a bit more. I would give myself a 75-80% pass on this months goal, and I'm going to adjust the window of success for the next goal and try to put in 2 hours everyday instead. I'm also going to continue to work towards that feeling of total accomplishment for this goal, because I feel there's still room to work on this.
These are a couple of great personal goals.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how many of us on the team have the goal, if unwritten, of practicing the other forms. It's one of mine for both this year and last.
ReplyDeleteI also incorporate my other forms on a weekly basis. I find this helps me to keep them fresh in my mind, and allows me to incorporate the lessons of the week.
