 Mastery is a product of consistently going beyond our limits

I think about this concept a lot, mostly in the sense of ‘what is a limit? How do I define it?’, and sometimes in the sense of ‘what are my limits?’ I think these ideas go really well with our mantra of “Where am I? What am I doing?” because a limit is a very fluid thing. The second that you push yourself beyond what you thought you could do, the limit becomes redefined and shifts further, if you don’t know Where you are or What you’re doing then you can not define where your limits are. 

Similar to my last Mastery Blog I wonder about the use of the word “consistently” in the context of limits. If a limit is something that by definition is always moving just out of reach, and the path of Mastery tells us we must always strive to be pushing past those limits, the idea of mastery can become exhausting. What is the point in reaching if I know that it is something that cannot be reached? It is really easy for me to parrot back “it’s about the journey not the destination” but in terms of understanding this passage and finding an answer for myself as to ‘why am I on this path?’ I need to re-word it: I will never attain the satisfaction of reaching the end, because by definition it is endless, but I can take pride in knowing that I pushed myself passed what is possible. Just because the goalposts are constantly shifting doesn’t change the fact that at one point I crossed them, that I did something I used to think was impossible, and isn’t reaching the point of impossibility an inherent part of Mastery? That's what makes it exciting to me, that Mastery is both impossible and possible, the fact that it is unreachable means that there is no limit to how far I can reach.
